NZ’s TOP 200 COMPANIES FOR 2013
FINALISTS ANNOUNCED FOR DELOITTE/MANAGEMENT MAGAZINE TOP 200 AWARDS

New Zealand’s largest companies show strong performance off stable turnover.

Strong performances, against a backdrop of tough international competition, see New Zealand owned companies amongst the finalists in the 2013 Deloitte/Management magazine Top 200 Awards, with Air New Zealand, EBOS Group and Fisher & Paykel Healthcare vying for Company of the Year title.

The judging panel and audit team for the 2013 Top 200 Awards have reported their findings and the winners will be announced at a black tie event at SkyCity Auckland on Thursday 28 November.

While total revenue figures for New Zealand’s largest companies changed little from 2012, this year’s Top 200 Companies data show substantial increases in after tax profit. The judges commented that it has been a good year to build profitability off the back of stable revenue.

“Compared to last year, which showed the same companies have a year on year drop in after tax profit of nearly 27 per cent, 2013 reversed this pattern with an increase of 14.2 percent. “
The top 30 companies in the finance sector also showed a similar turnaround this year from the previous year’s drop of 3.7 percent, to an increase of nearly 20 percent in after tax profit.
Deloitte CEO, Thomas Pippos said the Top 200 Awards represent the pinnacle of corporate recognition in New Zealand.

“We are looking forward to celebrating the excellent performance of some of New Zealand’s most iconic listed companies, and acknowledging the material value this year’s group of finalists add to our economy,” said Mr Pippos.
Although there is a strong group of finalists in this year’s Excellence in Governance category the judges had qualified praise for the overall performance of the boards of New Zealand’s listed companies.
They commented that the post-GFC era had bred a climate of boardroom compliance where directors were overly consumed with managing risk – often at the expense of strategy and shareholder value creation. The judges believed this needed better balance.

This year’s judging panel, convened by Reg Birchfield of RJ Media, included: Neil Paviour-Smith, (managing director of Forsyth Barr), Suzanne Snively, ONZM (MoreMedia Enterprises), and Sandy Maier, (independent director).
